Apple season is one of those little signs that fall is really beginning.
Suddenly Iβm reaching for cinnamon again, warm drinks sound much more appealing, and baking something with apples feels exactly right.
And since International Eat an Apple Day is September 19th, I thought this was the perfect excuse to pull together some of my favorite ways to enjoy them.
There are cozy desserts, a fall cocktail, a warm mug of spiced cider, and even one Austrian recipe that might surprise you.
Start the Day with Apples
Creamy yogurt, oatmeal, raisins, fresh apple, and honey make this an easy breakfast when you want something a little more substantial in the morning. I especially like the combination of the crisp apple with the soft oats and creamy yogurt.
This one belongs firmly in my fall comfort-drink category. Warm apple cider with cozy spices is wonderful for a quiet afternoon at home, but it is just as easy to make for guests when the weather starts getting cooler.
If you would rather turn apple season into cocktail hour, try this fall version of a Moscow Mule. Apple cider, lime, and spicy ginger beer make it crisp, refreshing, and just autumnal enough without becoming heavy.
One of the simplest ways to turn apples into something special. This gently spiced compote is lovely with pancakes, yogurt, ice cream, or simply enjoyed warm by the spoonful.
For something a little more indulgent, there is this creamy custard apple tart. Tender apples and smooth custard make this exactly the kind of dessert I want with an afternoon cup of coffee when fall arrives.
Soft cinnamon apples underneath a buttery crumble topping, with no oats in sight. And if you really want to make dessert special, serve it warm with my homemade sour cream ice cream.
Apfelkren is a traditional Austrian combination of apple and horseradish that is usually served alongside savory dishes. The apple softens that unmistakable horseradish heat and gives you this wonderful sweet, sharp contrast.
It is definitely a very different way to celebrate apple season!
But if you are already quietly collecting holiday ideas, save this one. Apple cider gives classic eggnog a seasonal twist that bridges those cozy fall flavors with Christmas beautifully.
